We want this site to work for everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard only, or a phone with the text size turned up. Here is where we have got to.

What we aim for

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard UK public sector websites have to meet, and while it is not a legal requirement for a business like ours, it is a reasonable bar and we would rather clear it.

What that means in practice

  • Every page is a real page with its own address, and works with the browser back button.
  • All text meets the AA contrast minimum against its background. Several colours in our original design did not, and we changed them.
  • The whole site can be used with a keyboard alone, and the element you are on is always visibly outlined.
  • There is a “skip to content” link at the top of every page for anyone tabbing through.
  • Headings run in a sensible order, so a screen reader can be used to navigate rather than read everything.
  • Images have descriptive alternative text. Decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers rather than announced pointlessly.
  • Form fields have proper labels, required fields are marked, and errors are announced rather than only shown in colour.
  • Text reflows down to a 320-pixel-wide screen and can be zoomed to 200% without anything being cut off.
  • Animation is minimal, and what there is respects the “reduce motion” setting in your operating system.
  • Nothing important depends on colour alone, and nothing flashes.

Does it need JavaScript?

Almost none of it. Every page of content, including the full price list, works with JavaScript switched off. The two exceptions are the mobile navigation menu and the live calculator on the build an order page. If the calculator will not run for you, the same prices are listed on the trade and pricing page, and you can simply tell us what you need using the form or by email.

Known limitations

  • Some photography is still to be added. Where a photograph is missing you will see a marked placeholder, which is announced as such rather than left as an empty box.
  • The price tables are wide. On a narrow screen they scroll sideways within their own panel rather than shrinking to unreadable text. The panel is reachable by keyboard.
  • We have tested with keyboard navigation, browser zoom and automated checks. We have not yet had the site tested by people who use assistive technology every day, which is the only test that really counts.

Tell us if something does not work

If you cannot use part of this site, please email trade@lucentlabs.uk and tell us what happened, what page you were on, and what you were using. We will fix it, and in the meantime we will happily deal with your enquiry however suits you best.

You never have to use this website to order from us. An email describing what you want is a perfectly good order.
